Spitting up mucus and has a sore throat.?

my bf is congested really bad with mucus and has a sore throat. i felt his head, and hes pretty hot, like he might have a fever. Hes took nyquil last night, and dayquil for the mucus this evening...he still feels like crap. is there anything else he can do to clear it up?? hes gargled salt water...
